Coding, the instructions written for a computer to follow step-by-step, has taken over the world. Laptops, cell phones, cars, and even coffee makers have been consumed by the technology industry and made computerized. Because of this major increase in technology, there has been a debate on whether or not K-12 schools should implement coding classes into school curricula not only nationwide, but worldwide. Some think that making children learn coding is unnecessary and expensive for schools to integrate into the educational program; while others believe that with a changing world, the children of the future need to be able to perform the necessary skills in the technology industry. Right now, there is an immense shortage of skilled programmers in the technology industry that are needed in many fields. Many employers are desperately searching for people to make websites or certain programs specific to their line of business. For example, the owner of a bakery may need a specific software tailored to his or her needs of keeping track of inventory and the number of sales per item in the bakery. According to Michelle R. Davis, a writer for Education Week’s Digital Directions, 1.4 million jobs in the computer science area will be available in the United States by the year 2020, but only 400,000 college students will be majoring in computer science to fill these job openings that will have significantly higher wages than other jobs associated with several other college degrees (1). Students who are exposed to computer programming at an early age can be prepared for college and know the path that they would like to follow. Even if students do not want to pursue a career in the technology industry, coding skills can be used in other industries around the world. For example, a college graduate that knows how to code can use those skills in the field that he or she went to college
