It has gone up 0.6 degrees Celsius (1 degree Fahrenheit) since 1970, and it is projected to rise by up to 6 degrees Celsius (11 degrees Fahrenheit) by the end of this century” (Brown, L. 2009); climate change is a highly controversial topic which many individuals argue for and against its occurrence on the planet. In fact, this year the weather seemed to be a bit different in Ft Myers. In December it was unusually warm and in early January it was in the 50’s. Now that February is occurring, the temperature is similar to winter in Florida. Now, there is no telling if this halted winter is attributed to global warming or naturally occurring weather change over time; there is significate data to prove the warming of the planet, according to John T. Houghto, “Regional temperature changes could differ substantially from the global mean value,” this concerning statement suggests that for future predictions of Earth’s temperature, the temperature would greatly change compared to what the global mean value is. He goes on to say, “(b)ecause of the thermal inertia of the oceans, only 50-90% of the eventual equilibrium temperature change would have been realized by 2100 and temperature would continue to increase beyond 2100, even if concentrations of greenhouse gases were stabilized by that time” (1996, pg.6). This was published back in 1996 and greenhouse gas use has increased drastically since then. Higher temperatures cause more strange weather incidents to occur. Some of these are: Hurricanes, Tornados, and increased rainfall. The rainstorms in this area last year were more intense than usual, just the other day a small rain turned into a tornado which hit Cape Coral and other parts of Florida. Tornados are a rare occurrence in this area. Although it does seem like a random disaster it is strange it happened around the same time that global warming is expanding its impact; storms are meant to clear out areas and allow them to reform anew, however, if global warming makes it so that the planet creates more rainfall and unpredictable weather, this can be bad for the environment as it will not allow it time to regrow.
