The rise of obesity in the United States has started to raise concerns. Due to the increasing amount of time children spend sitting on the couch, eating junk food, and watching TV, they are putting themselves at risk of becoming obese. The lack of exercise many kids get throughout the day also puts them at risk. Many solutions have been floating around for a long time trying to slow down the rise of childhood obesity in the United States. In 2012, nearly one third of adolescents in the United States were obese or overweight. After reading that startling statistic, you (a concerning reader) are probably wondering what my (Jason Steckley) idea is to slow down the rate of obesity in children. Some of these failed attempts include commercials advertising eating healthier. Other commercial attempts advertise exercising machines to help burn calories to lose weight, many of which state you will lose weight quickly. These type of commercials only work for small amounts of people. Those people include the ones that already know the risks of becoming overweight and/or obese. If these commercials would also state all the problems that come with being overweight and obese, the commercials would be more productive in selling their product and promoting a healthy lifestyle. The theme some of these commercials should follow the commercials of how cigarettes affected constant users. Those commercials are used to scare the users of cigarettes into stopping the nasty habit. I believe that if there were commercials on TV that showed what happens if people continue eating unhealthy and become obese. Some of the problems that occur when someone is obese are, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart diseases, and many more. Commercials that are promoting meals that help you lose weight are not as effected because most people do not believe that they actually work. Even though these commercials are using the ethos rhetorical appeal, it is still not enough for many people to invest in to. Commercials and other adult figures can only do so much for slowing down childhood
