Clink! Clunk! The sound is heard over and over.Struggling to breathe and in a desperate need for water children mine for gold. Risking death with every step they take due to a tunnel only as wide as their body collapsing or an explosion, they work from sunrise to sunset with barely any pay. They do this on a daily basis for most of their childhood. Many are likely to get health problems in the future from the exposure to dust and chemicals. Most will never get a decent education either. Millions of children around the world are victims of child labor. The number of child laborers worldwide has dropped from 245 million to 168 million between 2000 and 2012. Although it has decreased significantly it should drop even more. “approximately 114 million (53%) are in Asia and the Pacific; 14 million (7%) live in Latin America; and 65 million (30%) live in sub-Saharan Africa.” The main reason for child labor is due to poverty. It then turns into a vicious cycle. The father who had been a child labor will most probably have a disability causing the children to start working at a young age to make an income. The children will then have little to none education. This process will go on and on for many generations unless stopped. When asked “what could be done to end child labor?” Madhuri Meda said “Governments should give parents better jobs and supplies for school” There are many organizations today that strive to reduce child labor and increase education rates. For example, “Stop Child Labour” is a coalition of many organizations around the world. They work with governments, companies, and citizens around the globe to become a part of the solution. Without help from people, it will never be
