This is hurting public schools students by reducing all types of programs because of enrollment issues. Indiana allows mid to above average income families to receive vouchers. These families can now send their children to private schools with their parents additional financial help. The low income families an get their voucher BUT, they still can't go, because they don't have the extra money to pay for top educational-type of school. This is taking money out of the school districts coffers, because voucher students take their money with them to, for profit charter schools. A prime example is Indiana, in 2011 there were 3,911 students receiving vouchers. In 2016 there was 23.686 students that were taking money out of the public school system by the voucher system. Some schools have a great reputation for educational excellence while other schools are avoided because of their reputation for low student achievement. Two reputable sources on this topic include Jonathan Kozol’s article, “Savage Inequalities”, and Bill Moyers’ documentary, “Children in America’s Schools”. These sources discuss the causes of school inequality, which include school funding, school conditions, and demographics. Some of DeVoss’ main views include privatization, religious education, and a “hands-off approach to accountability for public schools.” Betsy DeVoss was president of a program (before she became secretary) that gives vouchers to students in need so they may attend a private schools. Vouchers are where state dollars go to paying for a tuition at a private school. This program has faced constitutional problems in the past, main reason is that they direct public money to religiously based programs. In a scholarship tax credit program, however, the money bypasses state coffers altogether.…

Public school funding has been an ongoing issue for years. No matter how wealthy the district is, there can be an issue for all when the funds are not distributed fairly. Without enough funds from the government, schools cannot provide adequate supplies for the classroom, cannot provide sufficient transportation cost and cannot pay salaries to those involved in the school district such as teachers and administration. Public school funding also helps provide reduced and free meals to students who qualify. What a lot of people don’t know is where all of this money is coming from and who is paying for it.…

Lower-income neighborhoods struggle with maintaining adequate facilities, up to date books and technology. Because taxable wealth such as, property or income, is lower in high poverty districts, poor districts will always raise fewer education dollars than wealthier ones. (Baker, Brian). To compensate for inequality, states’ schools funding formulas try to distribute more money to low-income districts but this is not always the case. (Frolich).…

It would be unfair for a school that is already wealthy and has all the new materials and objects to receive more money to spend the government money on something unnecessary. The money that goes to the big rich schools should just go to the poor schools so that way the poor schools can use the money for something important. Such as new textbook’s, new classrooms, new desk, new technology for the students and teachers to use. The wealthy schools would just use the money for unnecessary things like new appliances for the lunch workers to use, vending machines in the teacher’s lounge or a brand-new teacher’s lounge for the teachers to relax in. usually the students that attend a rich or wealthy school life in a higher middle class household.…

One study even found that fourth-graders from voucher schools were as proficient, if not less, than MPS fourth-graders in math and reading (Borsuk 2009). This lack of improvement in academic achievement has the potential to create negative lasting impacts on the lives of so many Milwaukee children. The fact that students are even achieving below the present rate in public schools is a cause for major concern. It begs the question, what is it about these schools, which boast such different academic practices, that causes student achievement rates to remain stagnant or even plunge lower than their public counterparts? Many choice schools do not hire as large of a staff as public schools, thus creating big classes with large student to teacher ratios.…
