As you know, the UK is not in its finest economic state. I am writing to give you a possible way out: legalise cannabis. Right now you are probably fighting against this idea instinctively, but I would like you, just until the end of my letter, to keep a completely open mind (it can not do any harm).
Cannabis, hemp, marijuana, whatever you want to call it, is the most widely used illegal drug in the UK. Alcohol and tobacco are also popular, widely consumed drugs. However they are legal. One would think that this means that alcohol and tobacco must be less dangerous or addictive. In reality, it is quite the opposite.
To add, the UK government makes around twenty six billion pounds each year off alcohol and tobacco alone; just think what an extra five to ten billion pounds coming from the taxation of cannabis could do for our great nation. How would you like more hospitals with better health care? How would you like to up the funds going to help the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan? How much do you want to improve the public schooling system? How much more do you want to donate to charities in the UK and abroad? What you may have forgotten is that these people are already taking cannabis illegally and are still using the NHS. People will continue to make, take and distribute cannabis however hard we try, whether it is down to religion, addiction or any other cause. Why not use cannabis to help the country? Instead we will continue wasting money on police work surrounding the trade and incurring hospital bills from people who cannot come forward about their problems.
