In the last few years there has been a lot of discussion on whether or not athletes should be playing multiple sports or just playing one. Athletes today tend to think that playing multiple sports is bad for them, but sticking to one sport is the thing that can actually hurt them. Studies have shown that being a multi sport athlete is actually better for you then just sticking to one. Most division one and professional athletes played more than one sport in high school. Specializing in one sport is mostly frowned upon towards little kids because their body is still developing. Since their body is still growing they should be trying to build all their muscles in their body by playing multiple sports. If a young kid only plays one sport when their body is still growing they are strengthening only certain muscles in their body that the sport they are playing develops. Medical reasons have a factor in choosing whether you want to play one or multiple sports growing up. According to pediatric orthopedic specialists children who specialize in a single sport account for 50 percent of overuse injuries in young athletes. This happens because their bodies never get a break from the sport they are playing year round. They are constantly using the same muscles over and over never giving them a break which is not healthy. A study was done at Loyola University showing that athletes who specialized in a single sport were 70 to 93 percent more likely to be injured than children who played multiple sports.
