“The female body is a cultural artefact defined and redefined over time in response to broad cultural and historical transformations. Historically, the body has taken on a tubular and slender form in eras in which the female mind has become more politically, economically and socially independent. One need only reflect upon the popular image of the 1920s flapper and the 1970s fashion models to observe the validity of such an assertion” – Hesse-Biber, Howling, Leavy and Lovejoy (2004).Women for many years have been told in numerous magazine and television ads that true beauty lies in softness and vulnerability and any woman who does not cecum to that notion of beauty isn’t feminine or beautiful. Ever since the 21st century, strong women have been seeking to defy such notion of beauty and to change society’s perception of it. That’s the message MAC; a beauty cosmetic company is trying to send across in their 2013 campaign.
MAC cosmetics really tested the limits with their 2013 spring makeup collection campaign. Being a beauty cosmetic company, the last thing anyone, especially their buyers and audience would expect is them using a woman with physiques most would consider not feminine. But after seeing this ad, they will gain the confidence to go to a cosmetic store and buy the mac brand makeup because it is the only brand that is truly representing them. That is the goal of many companies; to sell products and make money. Through this ad, mac would not only appeal to new audience, but gain the trust of their regular audience.
