Did you know that over a 100 million animals are killed due to animal testing in the U.S. alone (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals)? Animal testing is the use of animals for testing in a lab and performing harmful and deadly experiments on including mice, rats, frogs, dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, birds, monkeys, and fish. Animal testing is a controversial topic because some people say that it is a good thing and that animal lives can and should be sacrificed if it helps humans as others say that there are better, more efficient and accurate ways. OSARS (computer based techniques) can make great estimates of the substance’s harm levels. Micro dosing is another option that can tell us the safety of an experimental substance and the way our body uses it before we use a normal amount on a human. Volunteers are given a very small dose of the substance and a very precise imaging is used to monitor the substances behavior. This option could replace some tests on animals and help screen out drugs. Advanced brain imaging, such as the FMRI is another option to take animals off the list of ways to test drugs. Volunteers can be used to replace some experiments with rats, cats, and monkeys that damages their brain. This is a way to safely study the human brain. Scientists can temporarily and reversibly induce brain disorders using magnetic stimulation.
