Each and every year, throughout the United States, millions of animals are left abandoned, abused or even killed. In addition to this issue, there is currently a pet overpopulation occurring in the U.S due to excessive breeding at puppy mills, dog breeding operations that put profit over the health and well-being of the animals. The majority of these animals, when left abandoned, are then euthanized due to minimal room in shelters. Upon having strong feelings towards this problem and wanting to take a stance, Jennifer Tlapanco, Mary Fan and I decided to volunteer at a nonprofit animal shelter, Sean Casey Animal Rescue.
Beginning in October and continuing to this day, we volunteer each Saturday, totaling sixteen hours of work. The experience

There are many ways, however, that you can help fight against this issue. If you don’t have money to donate, simply taking out time to volunteer at shelters such as Sean Casey Animal Rescue will make a positive impact on this problem by providing more aid to these nonprofit organizations. Additionally, one of the most significantly important solutions to this issue is to stop buying pets from shops that support puppy mills. The bottom line is that puppy mills are all about profits, meaning that whatever may cut into their profit, such as quality food for the animals, veterinary care, or shelter, is not provided. This disgusting habit must be put to an immediate end. By refusing to buy animals that come from puppy mills, you essentially cut their profits and run them out of business. This will also contribute to the end of overbreeding and stranded animals.
Volunteering at Sean Casey Animal Rescue has been, and still is, an amazing experience. Jennifer, Mary and I have worked tremendously to educate those around us about the issues of animal mistreatment by informing friends and family about the issue, posting on social media with ways to help the cause, and by volunteering at an animal shelter. In the near future, we hope to see a nation-wide effort to put an end to this problem and take care of these helpless

Adopting a dog to complete someone’s family saves that dog’s life, improves their own, and fights against breeders and puppy mills. Overcrowding is a serious issue in our animal shelters; the ratio of incoming dogs being rescued to dogs being adopted is vastly unequal. Over two and a half millions innocent dogs are euthanized each year because of overcrowding. This is in part due to the fact that people are buying from pet stores, breeders, and flea markets. When a person adopt a pet instead of buying one, that space is then opened for another dog to be rescued and be placed for adoption.…

There would be an uproar if these loved pets were taken away and experimented on which most likely would end in death. Even if other animals don 't live in our home that doesn 't mean they deserve the misery they must endure for years. There are other options than to experiment on animals, options that will not only benefit animals but also the cosmetic market. People could confidently purchase makeup knowing that an animal didn 't have to give up their life to put on the shelves of stores. There will also be more sales in makeup when vegans and vegetarians realize that a brand has become cruelty free.…

From being kept in cages for years, with no human contact, constantly being bred, many are killed, abandoned, or sold at an auction. It is so cruel and sad how these people just abuse these animals. Most of the time when they are abandoned from puppy mills, it is the animal shelter that warily picks up these animals, and does everything in their power to save them or find them a new home. So, once the mills breed the animals, they ship them off to pet stores, where the puppies are sold at high prices, and the mills make money off of them. If people stop buying from pet stores, then the puppy mill would begin…

Thousands of dogs and cats enter animal shelters everyday without the hope of ever leaving. They often end up in these shelters due to the owner’s lack of responsibility or ability to care for the animal; many become lost and wander the streets until found, while others are the result of irresponsible backyard breeding. Shelters euthanize millions of these animals every year in the U.S. due to the lack of adoption because a large number of people would prefer to buy a pet from a pet store or private breeder causing the shelters to overflow with unwanted animals. Adopting a pet is an action that everyone should practice, or at least give great consideration to. I argue that by performing this action, we will not only bring ourselves satisfaction…

The parents of the puppies, since the mother is bred until she is unable to reproduce any more litters, are usually killed at the mill. Puppies begin to be marketed as young as eight weeks old, and are sold to pet shops through a middleman. “Other puppy mill puppies are sold directly to the public, including over the Internet, through newspaper ads, and at swap meets and flea markets” (Puppy Mill FAQ). Adopting from a shelter reduces the demand for commercially bred puppies and kittens, who would potentially be sent to shelters for a number of factors (The Adoption Option). “According to the American Humane Association, the most common reasons why people relinquish or give away their dogs is because their place of residence does not allow pets (29%), not enough time,…

People can steal animals and heartlessly abuse or kill them for experiments. Everyone should always keep an eye out for animals. People can make a difference and make the world become a better place for animals. “RSPCA inspectors saw more than 94,130 animals over the course of the year that had been mistreated through a lack of food, water, shelter or medical treatment, or other abuse” (“Animal Abuse”). We need to encourage friends and families to always respect animals and to treat them with more dignity.…
