In recent years, states have been cracking down on animal cruelty in a domestic setting. It is a felony in 46 of 50 states to neglect your pet. Why is it a felony to neglect a dog but the chickens that spend their entire life in a cage don't make people blink twice. This issue affects everyone, whether it be the shampoo you use, the steak you ate for lunch, or your prescription, chances are you are taking advantage of animals possibly without even realizing it. There is more animals now than ever that are undergoing medical tests in hopes of curing diseases such as aids. While it is important to make medical advancements, we have been infecting Chimpanzees with aids since the 1970’s with nothing to show of it. Even monkeys that have been cured by testing in labs, don't work on humans. Experimenting on animals is costly, cruel, and ultimately ineffective in advancement for humans. So why are we still taking the same approach? Harvard’s Wyss Institute has created “organs-on-chips”. Organs-on-chips are grown in a lab and mimic the same structure and function of human organs. This is an alternative that could replace the experiments on animals in order to find cures for diseases that affect organs. As for the testing of cosmetics, chemicals and consumer products, there is plant based alternatives such as ‘CeeTox’. Which would eliminate the need for small animals such as rabbits to have these chemicals applied to their shaved skin or be injected with these foreign compounds. Testing on animals for medical advancement, is the most justified animal rights violation. As a supporter of animal rights, I myself would rather see a Guinea Pig go blind from testing a hair product, than a child go blind. However, when there is countless other alternative why have we not taken advantage of the advancements we have already made? Over 100 million animals die each year as a result of animal
