According to The Free Dictionary the term animal cruelty is defined as, “the crime of inflicting physical pain, suffering or death on an animal, usually a tame one, beyond necessity for normal discipline. . .” ( ) Every day animals experience pain inflicted on them. Whether it be that they are beaten, neglected, or forced to struggle with the effects of abuse. Some animals don’t know if they will even make it to the end of the day because they are left starved, bleeding, or in unsanitary conditions. More than likely the animals will die before someone rescues them, but if they are rescued, they have another chance at life. Animal abuse is a growing problem in today's society. That is a little over half. This country needs to make it so in all 50 states animal abuse is a felony offense. There is many laws out there that pertain to certain types of abuse. For example, if someone was participating in a dog fighting event, they would receive a felony in from any state. If someone had possession of dogs for fighting, they would receive a felony in 46 states and a misdemeanor in the other four states. And finally, if someone were to be a spectator at a dog fight, they would receive a felony in 25 states, misdemeanor in 24 states, and in the last state, it is legal (23 Fascinating Dog Abuse Facts and Statistics). It’s amazing that states are finally making dog fighting illegal! There is no need for it. In California, animal abusers get a felony offense with presenting prison time and counseling (Gus Thornton). Canada has a different look on animal abuse than the United States does. Canadians who plead guilty for abusing animals will have up to five years in jail and more than likely will have to pay $10,000 in fines (Against animal cruelty). Abuse may cause animals to become aggressive or frightened and reserved. Abused animals can attack at anytime for any reason, while reserved and frightened animals sit back in the corner and do not attempt to interact with people. Some of the effects are long term, short term, or potentially deadly to the animal. A lot of animals that have been abused in the past are eventually going to be euthanized because of certain effects. According to Heather Vale, the effects of animal abuse are: “being distrustful and withdrawing from people, being hostile and vicious towards people, becoming depressed and act defeated, being reclusive and quiet . . .” (Heather Vale). Going to a shelter and seeing the poor animals like this is horrible. It is definitely possible to tell the difference between a animal that had a loving home and one that had been abused. Were people ever taught that little things can effect an animal for the rest of their lives? According to 23 Fascinating Dog Abuse Facts and Statistics, “leaving a dog outside on a hot day, or especially within the confines of a car, can cause brain damage to the animal in as little as 15 minutes” (Brandon Gaille).
