Persuasive Essay On Adopting Animals

Adopting a dog or cat from a shelter or rescue is much more convenient than buying them. This is due to the fact that most rescues’ adoption fee include many of the initial vet care expenses for a new pet such as a thorough examination, spay/neuter, microchipping, deworming/flea removals and vaccinations. Not only is this included with your adopted pet but many even include a 30 day period to return them back if there is a problem or you are unhappy with your pet. Buying one from a store can cost a person up to $500 for adult dogs/cats to $1,600 for puppies/kittens. This usually leaves the owner with having to pay out of pocket for the vet expenses. Neuter/spays alone can cost up to $150 while microchipping can cost up to $60. In the end, adopting saves you a lot of money and time. Many will argue that adopting takes too much …show more content…
Most likely, it came from what most call “puppy mills”, organizations where dogs are bred continuously under inhuman conditions. These breeders are known to be very irresponsible, providing little to no veterinary care for their animals. Breeders like these put forth profit over the welfare of the animals. Housed together in small areas, dogs catch communicable diseases and are prone to developing mental health issues. These breeders then sell them to pet stores which then end up in our homes. By adopting, we are not supporting these cruel conditions. When you adopt you are not encouraging these breeders to continue with their cruelty. Many will argue that the only fact why they buy from pet stores is because they are looking for a specific breed that shelters or rescues do not have. This is not necessarily true, many rescues actually specialize in caring for a specific breeds and all there is left to do is search for them. Most of the time, the breed you might want might not even be appropriate for your household or living conditions. Potential pet owners must keep this in

For these types of pet clinics to attain the necessary material/equipment needed in order to continue running smoothly, the government would have to be involved in order to provide funding for these shelters. This way they can avoid any problems that can come with not having sufficient amount of money to be able to pay for the building and equipment they use. Free pet clinics will be able to help families with low income, avoid bills from simple checkups that come with having a pet which can lead to families avoiding the decision of abandoning their pet to an animal shelter or the streets even. Although pet owners will have to pay for surgeries and medicine, they can be given a chance to pay a reduced price for the medicine and avoid the big bill of getting a physical for the pet. Families can be able to avoid stressing themselves out on how much they would have to pay for a pet; they can be together stress…

Dogs from breeders are typically young, unsocialized, puppies with little knowledge of how to act in the real world (Stilwell). One major problem with dogs that came from breeders is that they tend to have more health problems due to them being purebreds. Due to inbreeding, there is a higher chance of ailments and congenital disease among dogs of this kind. Inbreeding does not provide the offspring of a mated pair with the substantial genetic variation necessary to produce an animal that has a full range of health and behavioral attributes (VetInfo). This means more money will have to go towards paying off medical bills for their…

In the editorial entitled “Puppies For a Holiday Gift? Shop at Your Local Shelter” by Steve Reid, the benefits of adopting puppies from shelters as opposed to buying from puppy mills were described. Throughout the holiday season puppies are a very common gift to give, and most people buy from pet stores, which “come from sick and neglected puppy mills” (Reid). The main benefit listed is the low adoption fee and the services that come with the adoption; some services include spay/neuter, vaccinations, microchipping, and veterinary care. The most caring and intelligent dogs get adopted from shelters, and all they really want is a loving…

Puppy mills are large scale dog breeding facilities where making a profit is put as a priority over the well being of the animals. All too often these puppy mills abuse their animals, kill their mothers after they are no longer of use and are no longer of breeding age, and they deprive the puppies of a chance to learn normal behavior. Animals from puppy mills are put in horrible conditions and have improper medical care and as a result they are often very sick and behaviorally troubled as well. Puppy mills will continue to operate until people stop supporting them, and most people are unaware that they are contributing to them by shopping in pet stores, over the internet or through classified ads. By adopting you can be 100% percent sure that not a dime goes to…

Cloning pets, or animals in general, is a controversial topic. However controversial it is, it is still waste of useful money and is generally cruel in nature. While others may root for the advancement in technology, it is not worth the suffering and distress that follows, especially regarding health defects and the surrogate mother. Should we really risk all of that for cloning your pet? Cloning your pet is extremely expensive.…

Thousands of dogs and cats enter animal shelters everyday without the hope of ever leaving. They often end up in these shelters due to the owner’s lack of responsibility or ability to care for the animal; many become lost and wander the streets until found, while others are the result of irresponsible backyard breeding. Shelters euthanize millions of these animals every year in the U.S. due to the lack of adoption because a large number of people would prefer to buy a pet from a pet store or private breeder causing the shelters to overflow with unwanted animals. Adopting a pet is an action that everyone should practice, or at least give great consideration to. I argue that by performing this action, we will not only bring ourselves satisfaction…
