In “Our Kids need more sleep”, by Valerie Erde, it is explained that children need more sleep to do well in school. It has a couple of studies that say that children with more sleep do better in school, and are more alert in general. I completely agree with the author. I feel that if middle to high school students were allowed more time to sleep, it would improve most aspects of their life during school days. I know for sure that on the weekends, when I sleep in, I am in an all around better mood, and I am alert and ready for the day.…

The Mill Valley High School Board members should reject the proposed idea of a later school day because it is beneficial to students with after school activities such as sports and jobs. The idea that a later school day is beneficial towards students is preposterous because students with after school activities and jobs would need to be out of school at an earlier hour. Take John Sherwood’s testimony for example. He complains, “But it’s going to make football practice a nightmare. We won’t be able to be dressed and on the field until 4:45, and in October, it starts getting dark by 5:30...…

On the other hand, other people think that it is a bad idea to do this because students usually learn things out of school during summer break. The school year should not be lengthened because it stresses adolescents out, it will make them feel pressured, and it does not give them an opportunity to expand their horizons. Students need a break from school after their school year.…

After that, however, glaring flaws question a want for such a "luxury." For all of the ensuing reasons, I am strongly against any modification to the existing time system. Firstly, half an hour added to the school day consumed work and leisure time. Furthermore, costs for the school would be increased and overall enjoyment of students and staff would drastically decrease. Next, various sporting schedules inside and out of school would be disrupted.…

They did this because if they were to have the schools start later there would be no busses because of the time zones and other thing they have other jobs to go to. Another reason why schools should start later is because that they would have better test scores and better…

Students would be more focus in class with the extra sleep they would get and it would allow their brains to function better. Also, it would allow to have students to actually have a life and not be so stressed out all the time or give up and or drop out.…

Also, part of the reason why students don't get enough sleep is because they are up late studying. You can't expect students to come home from school, study, eat dinner, do their homework and then go to bed right away. Teenagers need to watch TV, talk to their friends, and run errands after school. We aren't machines; we need fun in our lives. Finding new ways to persuade students to be present to class is vital for the administration. Eliminating one day per week could be enough to motivate the students to attend class more frequently. As a consequence to this solution, the attendance policy would be more strict, fewer days would be allowed to miss, and classes would be longer. Every class Monday-Thursday would be an hour and thirty minutes long, instead of having fifty minute classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and an hour and a half classes on Tuesday and Thursday. Nevertheless, with a four-day school week, students would be able to fit more activities in on their three day break for friends and family, relaxation, and job responsibilities.…
