Drinking Age The age of 21 is when people finally get the right to drink alcohol, but why isn’t it at the age of 18? Consuming alcohol can become dangerous if not careful or under supervision, but this shouldn’t keep 18 year olds from having the right to drink. At this age people are considered to be at the stage of adulthood and should be treated like adults. In 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act, establishing the legal drinking age at 21. This act says that if a state doesn’t enact a law making the minimum age to drink 21, then that state will lose 10 percent of the federal funding for state highway money. Every state enacted this law very quickly. This act was passed to reduce drunk driving in the United States, but that has stopped people from drinking and driving. There are still many fatalities because of this all the time. Lowering the drinking age could diminish the thrill of drinking and decrease the urge to drink and drive. Whether it’s being able to vote, buying a cigarette, getting married, own a house, etc. The one thing that really stands out is an 18 year old has the right to enlist in the army. Now at a certain age for a person to have the right to risk his life for his/her country, it would sound reasonable to allow them the right to drink also. Also lowering it can be safer in some circumstances. Having this law prohibits people this age to drink in bars, restaurants, and other licensed locations. This causes under aged people to drink in unsupervised locations, which could bring unsafe behavior. For example, say a group of college students decide to drink some alcohol in their dorms unsupervised instead of going to a bar where it’s illegal. This could lead to very unsafe behavior and possibly drunk
