Persuasive Essay Of Banning Books In Public Schools

How would you feel if you were told that you couldn’t read something because others your age weren’t mature enough to read it? You’d be upset, right? The school board wants to do something similar, they want to ban books that “aren’t suitable” for young readers, just because they think that most middle schoolers aren’t mature enough to read about sensitive subjects. I believe that books with sensitive topics should not be banned from public school libraries, because it should be up to the students’ parents what they are and aren’t allowed to read, kids should be permitted to learn about specific topics beyond the classroom, and lastly, the school board shouldn’t be the ones deciding whether young students are mature enough to read about certain issues. …show more content…
They are stereotyping middle schoolers, saying that all of them are immature and incapable of reading or comprehending more advanced literature. Many middle schoolers are very advanced in language arts and it should be in their reach to check out books that match their reading level. Certain books that are considered to be beyond the comprehension of middle schoolers actually inspire creativity in their writing or other studies. They shouldn’t be denied the privilege of reading great, eye-opening books.

Secondly, the school board is mainly wanting to ban books with racial content in them. Students start to learn about racial discrimination from a young age, teachers emphasize on the fact that slavery is and was wrong. So if a racial slur or insult is written in a book then most students would probably know that it is wrong. Kids want to be more informed on issues that did happen in history.
