In order to better serve the people of the United States of America, there is much need for a requirement that states presidential candidates must have served in the armed forces before being eligible to run for president. Bill Clinton was against the Vietnam War and did everything he could to make sure he had nothing to do with it. He held off on registering for the draft and tried to join the reserves. He signed enlistment papers and recited the oath of enlistment to go to ROTC at the University of Arkansas but never reported to his duty station. After he sent a letter to the commander, he finally registered for the draft but received a high number that was very unlikely to get pulled. After all this, Americans still elected him as president. He was the first pardoned felon to become president of the United States.
Barrack Obama was another president who did not serve in the armed forces and made decisions to downsize the military in efforts to save money. With the surplus of military personnel being out of service, it made it extremely difficult for veterans to find jobs outside of the military. The result of this downsizing is having the smallest Army since 1940 and the smallest Navy since 1915.
Our nation needs leaders that know and respect what it means to be a leader. By serving in the military, they will understand what it means to be subject to war and terror. Our military should not be downsizing, especially with the current ISIS issue. We need to be able to protect ourselves and our country from terrorists who want to destroy us and everyone we
