We are living and breathing in a world full of possibility. Students everywhere are becoming smarter, more creative, and innovative, more than likely because of music. Music education is becoming more and more threatened to be cut from the school system; “I see the decisions my fellow principals are making, and I understand the pressure, but they need to remember the big picture,” says Paul Young, the principal of West Elementary School in Lancaster, OH. “I certainly believe everybody needs to be able to read and do math, but they also need to know how to think. What we’re doing now is creating kids who are able to pass tests.” Music education courses are known to bring positive effects on student performance, not just influencing a positive mind but the actual content of a student's’ academics. Many kids take part in music classes whether it be general music, choir, or music appreciation, yet the threat lies to cut these courses out of students’ lives. As a girl who will be pursuing a music education degree to its entirety I can firmly tell you the effects of these classes are far beyond comprehension. These classes can change someone's life forever, as it did mine. It took me out of a rough time in my life and gave hope and purpose to my life, and that is precisely what music is there for… an outlet to channel your negative energies and turn them into positive and healthy ones.
