Is Cheerleading a sport? Cheerleading is a competitive sport. The stereotype for being a cheerleader is that females aren’t capable of the athletic coordination that most males are able to do. Cheerleading should be treated as a sport because it requires intense skills and practice, mandates competitiveness, and requires strength and determination. Varsity Cheerleading Association asserts, “He says the exercises will help cheerleaders develop strength of the chest, upper back, shoulder, upper arm, forearm and hand muscles. Strength in these areas is needed so cheerleaders can perform lifts and pyramids safely and successfully” (Varsity). The time, dedication, and hard work that people put into pushing themselves and their team to be able to succeed allows teams to strive for the need to be competitive. In an attempt to avoid the knee problems that plague so many female athletes, Csillan advises limiting use of the leg extension and leg press machines” (Varsity). Cheerleaders also have to intensely condition to be able to lift during stunts. It teaches you how to do whatever you have to do in order to lead yourself and your team to success. cheerleading should be treated as a sport because of the intense skills, strength and determination, and the uplifting character that a basic cheerleader has. High school cheerleaders, are upholded from most students because they’re looked at as a leader and to set good examples for other students, (mostly young) at their school. Being a school cheerleader means to spread school spirit through their school and the community, make good grades, and be the best example they can be in and out of
