Should Students Have Less Homework Essay

Improved Essays
Students have absolutely absurd amounts of homework. It is not just an opinion, it is a fact. Students get very stressed from homework, and most homework assignments are just a complete waste of time. So, it is easy to put the clues together. If educators assigned less homework, then students would have less stress. Since most homework is just assigned for students to “do work” and “practice study habits”, teachers could easily cut down the list of assignments for their students to do, as most assignments don’t even do this anyways.

What is considered too much homework? Too much homework is when a student goes home after already spending about 6 of their day hours doing schoolwork, stuck at school, wanting to go home and do whatever they want,

However, these rules are not actual laws, so they are not required to be followed. One of these ideas, is a well thought out enough idea to be a law, and should be followed. “The 10-minute rule is strongly encouraged for all teachers - assigning 10 minutes of homework per grade level.” (Infographic: How Does Homework Actually Affect Students?) Realistically, there is nothing wrong with less homework at all. Teachers growing up hated it, just like everyone else, so why do they assign such large amounts? If nobody likes homework, and we all know it causes problems, why can’t everyone just to agree to assign less?

So, in short, there should be less, but more effective homework. Homework should be assigned according to the 10-minute rule, or maybe even less. Homework should be assigned to the 10-minute rule so students can worry less about homework and have more freetime. Obviously, the 10-minute rule may not be the same for everyone, as some people do work faster or slower. This is fine, its just about having less homework. Overall, students are just assigned way too much homework these days to enjoy themselves. Even as little as 5 minutes more freetime could make someone’s day much

My Declaration of Independence I am here today to announce my frustration with the amount of homework given on any day. The problem with all of the homework is that some people have other things to do, and may not have time to complete all of the given homework. I think it’s safe to say that the amount of homework is just a bit too much, and not completing all of it seriously can bring down some grades for people. People do not deserve to have homework in every class, almost every day.…

A Relentless Burden Various levels of government, including at the state and local level, impose guidelines on the curriculum for our public schools. The purpose of the curriculum is to establish an equal footing among students for their continued studies for college and the workforce. Homework is incorporated in the agenda and committee teachers impose a minimum requirement every night. With differing amounts in certain areas and days, people question whether a significant amount of homework does more harm than good in our modern societies. The U.S News & World Report conducted a survey on over 1,000 students and confirmed that “teachers on average assign about 3.5 hours of homework each week.…

Most people would agree that more homework would be a less than desirable, but if we started schools later students would pay more attention and if students payed more attention in class then maybe less homework would be assigned because they would have already covered it in class. Often times when students complain about homework teachers state that if they had paid more attention during class that we would have less homework and maybe they are right. Teachers can not exactly give us all the material in their allotted time if the students are being distracting and loud; Therefore they have to make up for the time with…

Abeles writes, " daily homework of many students is as long as lawyers, teachers, medical residents. " I agree many students get a lot of homework in a day from all the classes combined. To a teacher assigning homework may think that he/she is not giving a lot of homework for the night, but combined with all the other teacher's homework kids get overworked. I can remember a time in high school when I got math homework about 20 questions. Then I went to my English class and had to read a chapter from a book and answer a few questions.…

I think kids should get less homework because some kids complain when they have to stay up until 2:00 to 3:00 o’clock in the morning. Homework gets harder on kids because they have to stay up late so they complain. Although homework makes you smarter students should get less homework because homework makes it where kids get less time to have fun and it also makes it where kids barely get time to have fun with their family. One reason why students should get less homework is it makes it where kids have less time to have fun with their friends.…

Students already spend a third of their day working hard at school, and another third of their day sleeping. They deserve to have the remaining time to enjoy more important things such as time with their families. The most important reason homework for students should be banned is because it interferes with invaluable, quality family time. Many students do not have enough time to have a break let alone time to spend with their families.…

There are various effective arguments I would make to support students having homework by their teachers. The first argument I would make is that homework helps students to better retain the lessons they’ve learned during the school day. Students need a lot of exercises to do to retain what they learn everyday in school. Since class time isn’t enough to provide a lot of exercises on one subject, homework is the best way to exercise what’s been learned in class. If no homework is given to students on a subject that’s been discussed in class, it’s more likely for them to forget the subject the next day.…

Students get up early, get ready for school, then are at school for seven hours; they then have after school sports, jobs, and homework. Homework overload is one of the bigger problems with the system. When I was in ninth and tenth grade, I would come home with 2-3 hours of homework. I struggled with keeping up my grades and staying focused on my homework. I would get distracted because it was hard to stay focused on something for so long, especially when it was something I didn’t enjoy.…

Schools could implement a grade-wide calendar where teachers would input the homework and upcoming projects/tests for their students, along with the estimated amount of time they would like for students to spend working on their work with the ultimate goal of limiting teachers from assigning more than six or seven hours of homework a day. If teachers assign any more, students often start resorting to tactics like copying. Even if they wholeheartedly attack the assignments, they won’t retain much if they finished it at three o’clock in the morning. Ideally, the distribution of homework for each class would be constant most days, even before tests because an all night cramming session wouldn’t help either. Instead, studying spread over the course of the week before the test would be best.…

This is because the average student receives excessive amounts of homework, which is causing stress, among other things. The "Ten-Minute Rule" is a suggested homework limit endorsed by the National PTA and the National Education Association of the United States. It recommends ten minutes of homework per grade level, per night. High school students, then, should receive no more than 90-120 minutes of homework each night. A survey taken in 2014 showed that these students actually spent, on average, 3.5 hours doing homework, each night.…
