Study Abroad Personal Statement

When I was in high school I saw a brochure for a study abroad program to England. At that time, it would have been impossible for me to participate because of the cost and health problems in my family. I put that dream aside until I discovered the Literary London program with the English department, which I think I’m a perfect fit for. I’m a senior at the University of Washington completing an English major with a minor in History. This is my second year at the University of Washington, I came in as a first year junior transfer student last year. My expected date of graduation is the summer of 2016, which makes the spring in London program my last chance to participate in this once in a lifetime experience.

In the three years I have been a college student, at my community college and the UW; I have proved to be devoted to my education while participating in extracurricular activities and working. Although I have never participated in a study abroad program before, I do believe I’m a good fit because I have proven to be a dedicated student, independent, and mature. The way the program teaches also fits with my learning techniques because I’m a visual learner, and by going out into the streets and in buildings of London studying about various aspects of the society and culture in London I will be able to absorb the information better than if I was learning about it in a …show more content…
The impact of this experience will be immeasurable because it will teach me about another culture, society, and people. By learning about and immersing myself in a foreign land it will give me an appreciation and admiration for other societies and their traditions; which will change how I view the world and our society. Besides learning about a different culture, it will also add to my personal growth. By living in another country for three months, I will learn a lot about myself through education, making new friends, and discovering new things every day. Since I have never been so far from home, it will give me an increased level of independence and maturity. Also, by studying abroad, it will be beneficial on any future applications for graduate school and future job applications; which will open many doors for

Personal Statement Almost everyone had a rod in hand as they walked through the main street headed for the pier or docks to try and reel in a tasty morsel for dinner. In my small fishing village surrounded by serene mountains and lush waters, I grew up distant from many of life’s amenities and creature comforts. Surrounded by family and relatives, I lived in a capsule of love. Little did I know that in several years, I would be on a plane bound for the United States, uncertain about my future but resolve in my dreams.…

As a year-round student-athlete, balancing classwork and academics with training has been at the forefront of my entire high school career—freshman to senior year. Though the classes I undertook were rigorous and required an extreme level of commitment and attention, I persisted with my athletic career because it taught me several valuable life lessons. The sport I feel that I am most involved in is Cross Country. While only a fall sport, it is, in my opinion, one of the most physically demanding and difficult sports to compete in. We train by running upwards of thirty miles a week to compete against other teams in 5000-meter races on various terrains.…
