For the last 6 months of her life, my mother did not want to live. She suffered from advanced cervical cancer that spread rapidly throughout her body. After battling a bacterial infection acquired after surgery, she was left weak, confused, and in a lot of pain. All the things that life made enjoyable were quickly being taken away from her. And she did not want to live. Imagine a life where an illness has taken over your entire body. This illness left you incapable of conducting the basics of life; you can’t breathe on your own, you can’t move when you want, you can’t talk. We live in a country where we have rights to speech, to learn, to love, to live, so we should have a right to die as well. If a patient is terminally ill and would like to avoid excruciating pain in a dignified manner, it should be their right. We are said to live in a country where we are free to make our own decisions, but are we free if we can’t decide whether we live or die in our own lives? However, there are conflicting viewpoints regarding physician assisted suicide. For instance, religious opponents disagree because they believe that God decides when a person dies. Many terminally ill patients are at the end stages of their life. If the patients are competent and can still control their mind, they should have the right to do what they want. When my mother was sick all she kept telling me and my sister is she did not want to suffer and she did not want to be in pain. We discussed with several physicians how this cancer would kill her. And trust me it’s a terrible, terrible way to die. Right now, physician assisted suicide is only available to a small number of Americans, which in my opinion is unethical. Those Americans would have to have the means and ability to move to a state where assisted suicide is legal. I believe the choice to physician assisted suicide is ethical because it 's a choice. If people have the right to refuse life-saving treatments, then they should also have the right to end their own
