When the words ‘cloned beef’ are said what comes to mind? Some scary sci-fi movie which cattle looking like Frankenstein are running around, a steak on one plate being replicated by huge machines on another plate, or some futuristic thing that’s too far fetches to need to think about. Now, what if I were to say, despite all the things sci-fi movies, activists, and scariest our ideas have told us, that none of these are true? Cloned beef is not something to fear. It is not something to be repulsed by, and isn’t something that should be banned. Cloned beef is a good, healthy food source that is a cheaper, higher-quality product that is virtually identical to non-cloned beef making unnecessary and misleading. If the meat is identical, how is there any way tell them apart? Once the embryo of a clone has been put into a cow, there will be no way to prove which cow has the cloned calf. Not only would having to rely on a honor system be illogical, but labeling it would send people a false impression. Walk into a store up to the beef. One package of T-bone steaks is labeled as cloned, the other is not. The average consumer doesn’t know what a clone is and more than likely will assume that the label “clone” means it is different. However, in reality, it isn’t. As the Welfare Ministry(a government organization of Japan that acts as the FDA does for food in America) “decided against mandatory labeling for the following three reasons: the amount of beef from cloned cattle is a tiny proportion of all beef sales, there is a strong resistance from the meat industry to label, and it would be difficult to ensure the accuracy of labeling as the distribution of meat is complicated and there is no way to detect false labeling(“Sale of Cloned Cattle Products to be Restricted”
