A genetically modified organism, or GMO for short, is an organism, plant or animal, that has been genetically modified to make it fatter, more colourful, more nutritional, etc.. Although you may think that you rarely eat GMO’s, you may be surprised to discover that most foods are genetically modified in some way, natural or not. Most fruits and vegetables are modified. The most common modified vegetables include corn, dog, and wheat, but it is not limited to those. Things like tomatoes, watermelons, and grapes are too. Tomatoes are made to be bigger, brighter, and better tasting. Grapes and watermelons are made to have no seeds and have a more colourful appearance. There are runours that GMO’s cause cancer in humans or autism in children. Another big reason people are so against the GM good is simply because it isn’t natural. Many scientific studies, however, have proven that GMO’s do not cause cancer or autism or anything along the lines of such. People are also strongly against GMO’s because they see it as animal cruelty, since animals such as pigs, cows, or chickens are bred to be more pleasing to humans. Some plus sides to genetically modified organisms include the food being able to withstand herbicides and pesticides, survive raging temperatures (whether hot or cold), produce more seeds, and make bigger, more appealing plants. They also can modify animals to live longer and to be bigger. I, personally, am okay with GM plants. Because the unmodified plants are normally small, full, and not nutritional, making them more colourful, better tasting, and larger is not going to do anything bad, in my opinion. On the other hand, I am highly against genetically modified animals. From what I have seen, the way these animals are raised and treated is absolutely terrible. They’re trapped in small pins, and beat when they do not listen. The amount of meat I ate before learning this was not high to begin with, but after learning all of these things, it has been cut down to only occasionally having
