[Alyssa’s argument] Animal testing harms over 100 million animals each year. It is a cruel, inhumane way to test different products. According to the Humane Society International, animals are subjected to force feeding, forced inhalation, food/water deprivation, periods of physical restraint, burns and other painful wounds. In 1944, John Henry Draize created the Draize eye test. (“Rabbits: Blinded for beauty”). This test is used by cosmetic companies to test the irritation of several chemical products. Rabbits are restrained and their eyelids are held open by a clamp, ensuring that they cannot blink the substances away. The chemical products are sprayed into the rabbits eye, causing them to be in pain. These rabbits are observed for a few days to see if the product has caused any irritation to the eyes. Once these days are over, they are either killed or if there has been no …show more content…
Scientists can say with confidence it is not. As stated above there are multiple substitutes, which have been proven to work better than traditional testing. Some also say that since we share 98.9% of our DNA with chimpanzees, the testing would be very accurate. This is also incorrect as there was a drug trial in France where they used chimps as one of the animals being tested. This drug hospitalized five people and another had irreversible brain damage (“What we know”). Even though we share a lot of similarities with chimpanzees and other animals that does not make them reliable sources for drug testing. We share 60% of our DNA with a banana but we wouldn't test our skin care products on
