Water pollution is a very pressing issue in the world today. Humans need water to survive. The earth is covered in water, nearly seventy percent of the surface is water. However about ninety-seven percent of that water is salt water, unsafe for drinking. The remaining three percent is what makes up the world’s freshwater. Of that small percentage of freshwater, about sixty-nine percent consists of glaciers or icecaps, thirty percent as groundwater, and nearly only zero point three percent as rivers and lakes ("Where is all of the Earth's water?"). Each year around fifteen million children under five years of age die because of drinking water contaminated with disease. Worldwide, two-hundred and fifty million people succumb to disease because of water pollution. Up to seven hundred million people worldwide ingest contaminated water. It is not just a problem for human beings though. Sea mammals, birds, and fish all perish, up to one hundred thousand deaths, because of discarded waste and plastic in water. There are various types of waste that is thrown into the world’s water supplies. Garbage, mostly plastic, organic matter, heavy metals, and sewage are only just a few examples. All of that waste can contain bacteria, which may cause diseases that are potentially life threatening (Sherk). People need to understand that water pollution is in fact a problem. Having clean water is essential for all life on Earth. Both humans and animals require it. There are a number of agencies and programs that people can join in order to get involved against water pollution. However, people can still help against the issue at home. Properly disposing of waste, recycling plastics, and trying to use less water are just a few examples.
