Personal Narrative: The World Is A Safe Place

I remember a time when I was four, playing in the backyard with my sister and dog, carefree because the world is a safe place and nothing could hurt me, except maybe a house fire or a tornado. Not anymore. The world is not what I thought it once was. The world I once knew was full of loving, accepting families and compassionate people. But it is actually full of ignorance, hatred, and bigotry. “The world is a dark, scary place,” I have been told that throughout my life and I refused to believe it. I suppose that is why I tend to see the good in everyone, no matter the circumstances. My aunt that disowned one of her relatives for being gay, she will fight and take a bullet for anyone she cares about. Everyone has some good in them, yes, some more than others, and so does the rest of the world. I fail to remember that one ounce of good does not always outweigh the ten tons of bad.
Being somewhat sheltered throughout my entire life, I never really had a real understanding of what the real world was like. I did not learn about the September 11th attacks until eight years after it happened. I was nine, but I still thought it was a one time event, like it was just a fluke and it would never happen again. I was so imprisoned in this sheltered mindset, I had no clue that anything like this had happened.
