In the United States nine people are killed every day and more than 1,000 are injured involving a texting driver. Twenty eight people everyday die involving a drunk driver and more than 800 are injured. People take a carefree approach to “no texting laws” since they know the punishment is less than drunk driving. If the punishment was equal a person would think twice before texting behind the wheel.
Texting and driving is just as bad as driving intoxicated because either way you are not paying attention to the road and if you kill or injure someone it doesn’t matter if you were texting or drunk. When you’re intoxicated your reaction time is slower. This can be compared to a distracted driver taking his hands off the wheel resulting in a slower reaction time as well. Also, taking your eyes off the road while texting is just as bad as drunk driver with blurry vision. So, driving drunk and texting have similar distracting qualities that can end in tragedy.
Many can argue that, you choose to become drunk but it’s a reflex to check a text while driving. The weakness in this statement is you may plan not to drive while drunk, but since your intoxicated, you aren't in the right state of mind. You have a choice to text and you choose to do it anyway even though know the hazards of texting while driving.
