Becoming A Tennis Player
Tennis is a sport that is all over the television in the summer during the Wimbledon tournament. This works to my advantage. I get to study top players in professional tennis. While most fans watch for enjoyment, I am watching to learn. I record many matches and later break down each player’s individual type of game and techniques. I have also read several books on technique and strategy. Nick Bollettieri states in his book, Bollettieri’s Tennis Handbook, “Having a game plan means devising a winning strategy before entering the tennis court. Your plan should include using your strengths as often as you can. I love finding out what they know about what works and does not work. Every coach has their own philosophy. Former tennis pro, James Blake, states in his book Breaking Back, “Don’t worry about winning every match or about your regional ranking-just worry about getting better.”(Blake 135). “If getting better was the definition of success, then as long as I was getting better, I was succeeding.”(Blake 135). I take a little of each from each coach’s philosophy. This allows me to put together what works for me as I will be doing this summer in the ITA Summer Circuit college tournaments. I will get experience playing players who are already in college at the Virginia Tech and Wake Forest tournaments. Nothing prepares you as much as playing top tournament competition. It’s one thing to practice and another to perform when the match is on the line.
In conclusion, preparing for the tennis season requires much preparation. In the process of preparing for the season, I work on my swing, work out, and study other player’s ideas on techniques and match strategies. Other athletes may be able to bypass this preparation and still be successful. For me, this preparation is necessary for me to have a successful season. These steps may sound easy, but they are very time consuming. I work many hours in the off season, and this hard work will allow me to have a successful
