Stress is a serious mental problem that is often overlooked. When I am faced with any event that my mind perceived as a foreboding danger, the stress causes my body to flood with hormones responsible for dealing with the increase heart rate, blood pressure, energy, and my ability to “deal with the problem” (American Psychological Association). But I cannot stress it enough that stress is not as simple as a heart pounding as one awkwardly awaits a first date or a job interview. It is a defense mechanism that, although originally designed to help our ancestors avoid predators, have become so common that for a while now I did not seem seems to find anything wrong with feeling the need to pull out hair as I struggle with trying to find a jobs, pay school bills, and ignoring an economy that is spiraling downwards. Stress is so common that it is not shocking that of ”44% of adults report that their stress level has increased in the past 5 years”, many of them can agreed on that their stress is typically caused by money, work, or economic issues (University of Maryland). I realize that everyone is vulnerable to it especially low income, lonely individuals that over labor themselves to the point they cannot find the time to talk to anyone about it. We as a nation brush it off. I along with many Americans like to pretend that the stress is temporary and not a big deal. We ignore the wrinkles that forms around our eyes, the sleepless nights, and the anxiety attacks that creep onto us as we drink our morning coffee. Thus, we refuse to take notice of the warning signs our bodies sent us. Stress has negative impacts on the mental and physical realm of the human body. Stress is damaging to physical health because it can “ trigger heart attacks, arrhythmias and even sudden death” (How Stress Affects Your Body). Many physical symptoms can be treated “with over-the-counter medications” and relaxation methods through the help of a physician or a licensed mental health professional (Stress). Believe it or not, simply taking a walk to take someone’s mind off a stressful event does wonders to the body. Every time before a gigantic test, I jogged around my neighbor or listen to relaxing music until I no longer feel my heart racing uncontrollably. Building strong relationships help someone avoid and treat stress while identifying what is causing his or her stress (How Stress Affects Your Health). Fake friends cause drama which increases stress load which is toxic to especially my mental health. At the same time, true friends can provide the emotional support for a person to understand why he or she is stressed out. Consequently, good friends lead to a life with less
