Persuasive Essay About Littering

After moving in on campus I began to notice how often litter appeared outside of my apartment. At first it wasn’t an issue until my friend came over for a visit; I gave him a tour and he complained about how dirty the campus was. It was at that point in time when I realized how ill-mannered some of the people I live with are. It was a total embarrassment for me to have to explain why people treated the campus like that. Of course there are reasons for why people do these things. Granted that there are no specific consequences behind littering here on campus, students abuse that privilege. One might think that it’s acceptable since there are no rules saying not to. However, there are state laws related to litter you can be fined $500 every time you litter n Texas (Texas Department of Transportation). Even though my University is private, I’m more than sure there’d be less litter scattered all over campus if there were affective rules given in relation to littering. Hence, there is an article emphasizing the integrity of a student attending Houston Baptist in the student handbook; “respect for the rights and human dignity of others, especially in the conduct of relationships; Respect for the rights and needs of the community to develop and maintain an …show more content…
It is easier to dispose the smaller pieces of trash on the ground rather than walking up to a container and disposing it properly. Sure there is a downfall behind this. Litter facts numbers three and four (3&4), proclaims that 71% of litter consists of microlitter such as such as cigarette butts, straws, and gum wrapper (Don’t mess with Texas). As stated once before, things like this were hard for me to notice, but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t pile up, and eventually it did. For this purpose, students need to realize how essential it is to simply throw their trash away correctly, even if it’s a tiny piece of paper; it still

In No Impact Man, Colin Beavan discusses many important topics, one of which is about trash. This topic got my interest because we see it everywhere, Colin goes into detail and discusses a lot of facts about it. An interesting observation was made regarding the black color of trash bags, that the reason trash bags are black instead of transparent is because people do not or cannot deal with seeing what is inside of them. Another related topic that always gets my concerns is recycling our waste. There are a lot of people that don’t recycle and just don’t care.…

For example, if cities were so clean that there was not a single piece of trash on the street, or in any public place, littering might not be such a big deal. However, most cities are riddled with trash. It is not one of those things that they do not want done just because. If littering continues to grow, the result could be catastrophic. Another…

Due to recent events, one idea has come to the fore: With radical Muslims killing our troops everywhere they can find them, it is clear we need a stronger force. It is true that we can utilize one of the many powerful weapons in our arsenal, such as the nuclear bomb, yet the civilian and biological affects of this are not worth it. It is clear; we should increase the size of our infantry. And it is fortunate we have this surplus of people lying around, literally. Experts tell us that tourists who see these homeless people lying around our cities find the to be demoralizing and therefore reduce the amount they spend.…

Society nowadays face many problems as a whole, as well as problems individually in different neighborhoods. In the surrounding area of Woodside, Queens there are many issues in which should be fixed in order to provide a happier living environment for its residents. People toss litter around like a game of basketball, except there’s no hoop around to aim it in (simile and irony)! Although it is a personal choice to litter and be impatient to locate a trashcan, lack of trash bins for disposable waste is a major issue. Let’s say you go out for a walk with a bag of chips.…

    Bottled Water Norms

The descriptive social norm on campus about bottled water is to carry one with you and to dispose of it in the correct bin. For example, when I go visit my sister to the U of A campus, I observed that students placed their trash in the correct bin, so I placed my bottled water in the correct bin. This descriptive behavior communicates that recycling and separating items is a social approved behavior, hence it is also socially acceptable to use them. To help change students’ behavior I would first do some Community Based Social Marketing (Koger & Winter, 2002, p. 114). I would let my community leaders know how promoting reusable water bottles on campus would not only be environmentally good, but if they give bottles to students it would…

The top two most common things littered are cigarette butts, and fast food packages. Smokers don’t think throwing their cigarette butt out the window or dropping it on the ground is littering, but it counts for 50% of items littered (King, 2013). The trash disposed of on the ground could take years to disintegrate, making it an item that must be picked up and taken to landfill or it will damage the environment. The pollution…

Did you know that on average a smoker spends $1000 for cigarettes each year? That’s a lot of money wasted for something that you don’t need and is harmful. Once again because of this filthy habit, the financial issue doesn’t only affect the smoker itself, but it can also affect other people: Between 1997 and 2001, smoking was responsible for $167 billion in annual health-care costs and lost productivity in the U.S. alone. Once you smokers kick your daily habit you will probably feel that you wallet is heavier or your bank account is healthier, you could save hundreds if not thousands of dollars each…
