Persuasive Essay About Education In America

There are many accomplishments America is proud to represent. Being the first on the moon, democracy, and naturally, cheeseburgers. However, to nobody’s surprise, America ranks 14th out of 40 countries in education, but is #1 in incarceration, teen pregnancies, and obesity. Unlike Japan and South Korea, this gives the impression that America is not investing enough in the youth’s education to keep up with the rest of the world. Why is this an issue? There has been a 28% job increase in the STEM field since 2000, and on average, someone in this field makes between $70,000-114,000 a year. Despite there being 100,000 of them, these jobs are not getting filled. During the Space Race between the Soviet Union and the United States from 1957 to 1975, America pushed science and math vigorously in schools. America desired for the youth at the time to be smarter than the children in Russia, in addition that they would to create future engineers. It worked, but after Neil Armstrong spoke his famous quote, America’s push for STEM in the classroom ceased. Unfortunately, 48 years later, no one cares about computers, robotics, or math anymore. Growing up, I did not have the same interest in computers, science, and math as I do now, due to the fact that the schools I attended focused on English and history. I could give you a short rundown of events from the 1600s to now, but I could not do basic algebra. I do not want this for any other girl in the US, or anyone for that matter. I want children to grow up loving technology and innovating what we have now, and I do wish for more young girls to pursue IT careers.
