Persuasive Essay About Drought

I believe that one solution we can do to mitigate water consumption in the world is to encourage people to plant more drought-tolerant plants or even native plants in our lawns and backyards instead of using sod or grass, especially in areas like California or Arizona. This is called xeriscaping, and it can prove to be extremely important for many communities. Although this solution doesn’t always apply across the entire world, it is achievable and realistic, and with the growing rates of drought globally, according to the EPA, it could soon prove to be an act that could save tons of water if new areas become drought-prone. Plants like cacti, lavender, sage, poppies, agave, and other desert plants are well-suited to drier climates, requiring less water to grow than grass or other plants. Even during the drought in California, many people did not transition to using these plants and continued to have grass with sprinklers, wasting more water than was ever needed. By encouraging people to create desert gardens using native or other drought-tolerant species and seeing the beauty in them is a way we can save water for more dire needs. …show more content…
However, in places like California, where water is becoming more scarce and are drought prone, this can prove to be a major problem. Lawns can potentially take in thousands of gallons of water every time the sprinklers are turned on, which can rack up overtime, especially from months to years. In addition, homes can use up to 50% of their total water intake just on their lawns alone, according to the U.C Master Gardener Program of Sonoma County. Compared to using the toilet, laundry, or taking a bath, a garden lawn easily wastes more water, even though we never see the true scale of how much water we’re wasting. However, there is a minor solution that can potentially make a huge impact on water

If we didn’t have the lakes, we always had groundwater, which was annually replenished by the rain and snowmelt from the Sierras. However, as the earth’s temperature steadily climbs, and the state suffers through a massive dry spell, demand for water has reached an all-time high, and groundwater use has soared as a result. This has caused the water table, or the depth at which water is found below the surface, to plummet as water is pumped from the ground faster than the aquifers can rejuvenate. Once farmers needed only to drill 500 feet deep to reach water, now they have to drill down at least 1,000 feet. Scientists have also discovered that the more water is taken out from Central Valley, the more the land begins to sink- the San Joaquin Valley in particular…

A lot of times people think of it as nothing and continue to allow it to be wasted. Imagine how much water gets wasted getting evaporated, and just going into runoffs. In some parts of California, rain is common. It's unfortunate to know that a lot of times rainwater is wasted and not saved or at least used for some kind of purpose. Rainwater could be saved and put in the underground holders, or cleaned and turned into fresh drinking water.…

Water conservations is not the only way they work with water used by their plants. At least one site has a water treatment plant that treats water but also produces methane gas. The biogas produced is then piped back into the plant to power heat and power engines (Fat Tire). Water is not the only resource that they try to conserve and reduce, this thought process also applies to their waste. Focusing on the waste produced and how to divert it from landfills is what will be discussed…

A good idea that goes with the drip irrigation is having a timer set on it. Set the timer to hours cooler in the day so you have a lesser chance of having the water evaporate as you would if it was hotter out. Another way to help reduce the agricultural purpose of water use is to do rotational grazing. Rotational grazing is when you put your livestock in the pasture in which you want to grow plants. This helps promote pasture regrowth.…

The issue of the California drought is one that has recently become front and center on the minds of its citizens. For the last couple of years California has been experiencing a drought noticeably hotter and drier than anything that we who live here are used to. In fact, the first six months of 2014 were the hottest California has experienced since 1934, the previous “hottest year”, beaten out by a whole degree. In fact, the NOAA, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, reported that 95 percent of California is in severe drought conditions and nearly 60 percent of the state is listed as D4, the worst drought conditions possible (Jahad, 2014). That is quite a margin of difference seeing as changes in temperature are usually measured in smaller, fractions of degrees.…

In the presentation, Name mentioned that “From April, 2015, the governor of California announced that urban water agencies need to reduce water use by twenty-five percent.” In the investigation, I was successful to reduce 21.57 gallons of water, which means I saved about 26 percent of water in the restricted day than my normal day. I met the target of saving water and I hope I can keep saving water. Furthermore, I realized that there are more than fifty agricultural water supplies and more than four hundred of urban supplies in California.…

First off you can get rid of all leaks in your home that may be wasting water every day. The amount of water lost through leaks is at around 8 to 10% of all water usage in California. The second thing you can do is to upgrade your irrigation systems. With how little water the grass gets in many people’s lawns, you should just replace the grass with plants that are used to the dry conditions and will be able to handle the drought. Then you won’t be wasting water on grass that is already dead.…

In the year in question agriculture consumed 33 million acre feet of irrigated water, while urban uses, including landscaping, consumed 8.3 million acre feet. One acre foot is about 326,000 gallons meaning the state’s total agricultural and urban consumption exceeded an incomprehensible 13.4 trillion gallons of water (McGinty, 2015). Given these numbers the big problem with California's water usage is not the everyday person and businesses it seems to be all the food grown here. As of April 2015 statewide water use has decreased about 13.5 percent. While that may seem like good progress towards saving water state wide you have to consider where it is being saved.…
