Cheating is defined as act dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage, especially in a game or examination. On its most basic level, cheating is lying. When you cheat when handing in an assignment or taking an exam, you misrepresent your work as your own. This misrepresentation has numerous effects on yourself and others.

Cheating affects the students that put in the hard to work to achieve a good grade only to be eclipsed by someone who cheated to a perfect score. Cheating can affect your future employer, who hires someone based on their ill-gotten school results, is shortchanged when it turns you they do not actually possess the skills and knowledge they were supposed to have learned. This results in a company wasting time and resources in either training that individual, or conducting a new search to replace them altogether.
