As the wise man Edward Freeman once said, “These awful wrongs and sufferings forced upon the innocent, helpless, faithful animal race, form the blackest chapter in the whole world’s history.” In the article “A Change of Heart about Animals” Jeremy Rifkin discusses that animals are no different than humans. Being no different than humans means that someone or something is similar to a human being because of either their characteristics or similar body parts. Animals are like humans in the way that they are intelligent, affectionate, and skillful. Animals learn by their behavior as well as humans, however, the only difference is many animals are brutally abused.…

A human could abuse an animal without any concern for the animals well being and their own. Three states enacted felony laws in the 1980s, 19 in the 1990s and 25 more since 2000 (including the District of Columbia) (HS). It also is saddening that animals have not been able to get justice until about 15 years ago, and even still the laws are not as strict as they should…

In 1966 President Johnson signed the Animal Welfare Act, which is the only federal law that protects and regulates the rights of animals in the United States to date (“Animal Welfare” 2017). All of the states have laws to protect animals, but the consequences and offences outlined in the laws differ in every state. This lack of laws and consequences causes the need for a discussion of the rights of animals in America.…

The United States lags behind in its anti cruelty measures for animals, compared to other developed countries. Critics of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) say that it doesn't do much because enforcement is poor, and there is little protection for animals. In addition, AWA exempts some circuses from these laws (“Entertainment Animals”). The American federal laws are vague and do not cover all the levels of cruelty. If an abuser is charged, under federal laws they can only be charged civilly which means fines, confiscating of animals, and service hours.…

Indeed, often, it is the mentally unstable that abuse animals, putting those around the abuser at risk for being abused as well. For those who, themselves, are not necessarily invested in the topic of animals rights, an analogy that might spur action would be to think about the potential of their loved one being abused. Animals cruelty manifests itself in other animal/human interactions. It might be instructive to examine the facts about this in the food industry; for example, 90% of the chickens bred specifically for meat production live a short, painful life, unable to walk because of, in many cases, forced genetic mutations. Many animals are as well tortured for scientific experimentation or, even more simply, for “fashion” as is the case of the clothing industry to obtain animal fur and hides for coats and scarfs and leather belts, etc.…
