The Art of Persuasion and Rhetoric Language Thank You For Arguing: What Aristotle, Lincoln, and Homer Simpson Can Teach Us About the Art of Persuasion by Jay Heinrichs is a compilation of tips and tricks on how to force an opponent in an argument to fall into the deception and guile of your mind and allow you to win the argument; or at least get them to see your side. The book has been published in over ten languages and reveals Heinrichs’s masterful skills of rhetorical language. To put it in another way, Thank You For Arguing explores the art of persuasion and deception, especially chapter sixteen, Know Whom to Trust, therefore Heinrichs’s book should continue to be used and analyzed. Heinrichs pulls the audience in deeper with examples and cheerful writing. In the first part of his book is about getting the audience to make a decision the speaker wants. It’s about trying to manipulate them. The other half is about using ethos, logos, and pathos as an advantage in an argument. Explanations are given to teach the average person how to learn the art of persuasion and how to use another person’s vulnerability for their own personal advantage. Not everyone is good at persuasion, but he is teaching people using this book. Heinrichs is a master himself of the rhetoric language and persuasion techniques. He uses real life examples and applications to help his readers better understand his teachings. For example, chapter 9 chats shortly about desire. Emotions and desire “let [someone] change a person’s mood” (Heinrichs 97) which is a stepping stone to getting someone to change their mind.
