The ability to persuade can be determined by three factors; pathos, ethos, and logos. Pathos appeals to the emotion of the audience. Ethos is a way for the speaker to garner the audience’s trust and respect. Logos makes a point through facts and statistics or other means of logical information. In the play Julius Caesar, many pathos, ethos, and logos are used in order to persuade characters. There are three main characters who use these methods well. These characters are Antony, Brutus, and Cassius.
Antony is a loyal friend of Caesar and at Caesar’s funeral Antony presents a well thought out speech. Antony is aware that the commoners loved Caesar. However, he has promised not to blame the conspirators for the killing of Caesar. Antony is unable to tell his audience the full truth without breaking his promise. Antony is trying to tell the people the most he can, and while both staying to the story and to his promise. In order to gain the crowd’s trust Antony states, “I will not do them wrong; I rather choose to wrong the dead, to wrong myself and you” (III. ii. ll. 126-127). By Antony trying to establish trust with his audience, he is using ethos. Ethos is very important because the commoners are lacking a ruler and need to establish to whom they can turn to and trust.
Antony is aware the crowd needs more than just trust and emotion to agree with his side. They need facts. Antony tells the crowd, “To every Roman citizen he gives to every several man seventy-five drachmas” (III. ii. ll. 242-243). Drachmas is a kind of currency.
