animated or bored. If there was a consequence attached, for example health risks from smoking, there is more likelihood of attitude change but if the consequences are too severe, compliance rather that attitude change would be the result.
Another consideration would be who it was I was trying to persuade. If the recipient was able to reason against change, and they had very valid arguments and believing in themselves to have the courage of their convictions, they would be more resistant to change than a recipient that is more open minded or suffering as a result of their current attitude. Having a conversation within a more informal setting is also more effective at changing attitudes. Many people having had the same attitudes and experiences as yourself can illicit a change through peer pressure and support.
Alcoholics Anonymous and similar support groups are successful for this
