Personification In The Seventh Man

Improved Essays
One literary device in “The Seventh Man” is personification. An example of personification occurs when “The Seventh Man,” states “What made me do this, I’m sure, was fear, a fear so overpowering it took my voice away and set my legs to running on their own.” (181-183) This is an example of personification because the author is giving human attributes to the fear that he feels by saying that it took his voice and made him run away. The author is saying that he was afraid and because of it he couldn’t save k. This is important because when a person is in a difficult time they just try to save themselves and do not care about others. This means that if a person does not care about others that person is selfish and tries to cover the real reasons

It has been said that what we value can be determined only by what we sacrifice. This applies to several characters in Barbara Kingsolver’s The Poisonwood Bible, especially Orleanna, Nathan, and their daughters. Through their sacrifices, characteristics and values become evident in these characters that would not be understood otherwise. The sacrifices made by these characters contribute to the novel as a whole by giving it depth and greater meaning, just as these sacrifices make each character’s intentions clear and presence throughout the novel more relevant. Orleanna made countless sacrifices throughout the novel for her husband.…

First, the main characters in The Octoroon have no complex qualities, but all are unidimensional and stereotypical stock-characters. For example, the character McClosky simply represents the purely villainous “yankee” who only wishes to commit malice in order to advance his own selfish desires. In addition, McClosky does not wish to conceal his villainy; rather, he assumes the archetype of an unsubtle and unhesitant trickster. This can be seen most evidently when McClosky finds a judgement (worth 40,000 dollars) on half of the plantation against Judge Peyton (owner of the plantation in Terrebonne) which would invalidate the “free papers” of Zoe (Peyton’s illegitimate daughter with his slave-woman) (I. 492-495). While Judge Peyton could use…

People tend to try to deny awful truths. Stephen King uses this line to show that Devin Jones, looking back on the moment when he heard the news about Tom’s brain tumor, is aware that although he wants to disbelieve it, eventually he must acknowledge it eventually . In this line, “the mind” is personified, as if it is a separate being. It is battling, metaphorically, against its attackers, sadness and despair. Devin has already demonstrated his tendency to block out unwanted information when he repeatedly continues to try to convince himself that Wendy still cares about him.…

While nature in poetry is often portrayed as being beautiful, peaceful, and essentially flawless, in this poem Dickinson intends for the audience to view nature from a different perspective. The entirety of the poem follows with a sad, dull tone while describing nature on a cold, windy, and cloudy day. Dickinson is careful to emulate aspects of a cloudy day to the facets of human life including snowflakes, the wind, and Mother Nature herself. The personification utilized in Emily Dickinson’s…
