A Mental Construct Each person constructs their own, unique, personality. I am not speaking of social types or psychological categories, but the unique expression of ones individuality. This is usually an unconscious and unintentional process that goes unnoticed, resulting in a personality that is limited by one 's self-concept, self-confidence and self-consciousness. Personality / Individuality For some the distinction between personality and individuality is obvious: an individual thinks, and what he thinks about, and especially what he thinks about himself, determines the nature of his personality. The personality does not think. It expresses the thought of the person. The individual thinks. Personality is thought. A person either expresses or represses their individuality through their attitudes and actions. Personality is defined by these attitudes; but the person is not. A person can change his personality, but personality does not change ones individuality. Because one is the expression of the other, we confuse our individuality with our personality. Conformity is an attempt to super-impose uniformity so that the many will appear to be, and act as, one. While this might give the appearance of oneness, it would not express Oneness. Only individuality can express Oneness. Uniformity cannot express Life 's creativity or Its ability to adapt and evolve. Conformity cannot express Life 's freedom and spontaneity. We are individuals because we individualize the one Life; but we fulfill our purpose only as we fulfill our potential for unique self-expression. This task falls upon our personality. We tend to think that our potential requires that we go where no man has gone before; but it doesn 't. We can each fulfill our potential here and now. It is not what we do, or even how we do it, that makes for a unique act of self-expression. It is simply that we express our self, going where we have not gone before and doing what we have not yet done. It doesn 't matter how many others have sung a song; it is uniquely done when I 've sung it! I don 't mean to make light of that which is fundamental to the nature of Life. I wish to emphasize that unique personalities are common place because they are a necessity for the full and complete expression of Life. I have no need for all the odd-balls and strange life-forms that populate this world, but God must, or it wouldn 't be
