Personality psychologists have determined personality to be defined as the enduring traits and characteristics of a person’s thoughts, feelings and behavior (Cervone & Pervin, 2013). The word “enduring” meaning the lasting and consistent aspects found within an individual’s personality (Cervone & Pervin, 2013). Many people conduct themselves and behave differently when placed in various situations. Also, some people tend to be more consistent than others. Personality psychologist aim to study what makes an individual behave consistently or inconsistently. Although psychologist could agree on a definition of consistency, the factors that influence consistency within a person are more complicated to define and determine (Cervone & Pervin, 2013). Personality psychology, like other fields within psychology, have several theories that vary across of range of different beliefs. For instance some theories rely heavily upon internal factors (genetics/biology) contributing to personality while others believe external forces (environment) have more influence on an individual’s personality (Cervone & Pervin, 2013). Therefore, there are many different views on what determines an individual behaving consistently across many different situations.
This concept of consistency or inconsistency within people is seen daily; for instance, comparing people that tend to always be at least five minutes late with people that consistently arrive five minutes early to a meeting. These simple…
