Carl Jung's Eight Function-Attitudes

Improved Essays
Personality Profile Paper According to mbtitoday.org (2015), Carl Jung identified eight patterns for how individuals carry out mental activities, which are referred to as function-attitudes. The four functions are sensing, intuition, thinking and feeling. The two attitudes are extraversion and introversion. These, along with perceiving/judging, combine to form the eight function-attitudes which are the basis for sixteen personality types listed at humanmetrics.com (2015). Curious to which personality type I fit into, I took the Jung Typology test at humanmetrics.com (2015). After numerous questions, my personality type was given as ISTP (Introverted, Sensing, Thinking, and Perceiving). Reading through my results interested me, and I wanted …show more content…
According to 123test.com (2015), perceivers thrive in an unstructured environment. Both Austin and I are free spirits who like to have multiple options, rather than being in a structured environment at school or home. We both value being independent and not having to conform to specific rules. This allows us to be creative, but this trait can sometimes be a disadvantage to our academic life. We tend to rather do a project or homework spontaneously without any fixed schedule, and often wait until the last minute. This causes us to be procrastinators. Because of this characteristic in both of us, it is easy to see how we share the perceiving …show more content…
Austin is a feeler and I am a thinker. Feelers, like Austin, tend to use their emotions to determine their thinking. Thinkers, like me, tend to use logic and reason when making decisions, according to 123test.com (2015). I think this is true regarding both of our personalities, based on the way we handle situations. Austin usually makes his decisions with his heart and I with my head. For example, when Austin reviewed a video game he listed the reasons for how the game made him feel: rewarded when he would beat the boss, happy to beat a level, etc. If I were to review the same video game, I would list facts: good graphics, character development, etc. The difference in the way we think balances out, we can usually see both sides of a situation just by looking at the others

The second category is based on the individual’s way of obtaining information, whether through sensing or intuition (S or N). The third examines if the individual makes decisions through thinking or through feeling (T or F). The last category is judging verses perceiving (J or P), where the individual’s lifestyle is either organized or flexible (Mitchell, 1996).
