Kay Boyle’s Winter Night is a gloomy story in more than one way. It is about a girl name Felicia, who is basically always left home with a maid or babysitter. One odd night, she gets a sitter, or “sitting parent” (as they are referred to in this story) that is unlike the caregivers she is accustomed to meeting. The woman not only presents a depressing demeanor, but also talks to Felicia and is affectionate towards her. The girl (Felicia) is fortunate and doesn’t quite understand the sitter’s personality. A Path To Individuality In the story, “A Pair of Silk Stockings” by Kate Chopin, a mother escapes her home temporarily, from all her worries of being in a lower class and encounters the luxuries that only people with a lot of money and wealth can experience. A poem, “Now and Then, America” by Pat Mora, however, is a short poem about a person that wants to be unique and free from society’s definition of ordinary. Even though the two authors both wrote about freedom, identity, and individuality, their attitudes of the theme are very different. In the story, “A Pair of Silk Stockings,” the mood is very dark.…

“Winter Night” by Kay Boyle, was a story I found to be incredibly thought-provoking and unique. One aspect I truly enjoyed was how the author created two separate worlds, where the characters were alike but their scenarios could not be more contrasting. These worlds were intertwined in some way by the sitter, who reluctantly shared with Felicia the tale of the little girl she reminded her of.
