Our personality is what distinguishes us from one another, every individual has differences in his or her characteristic patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving. According to the book, Introduction to Psychology, by Rod Plotnik, “personality refers to a combination of long-lasting and distinctive behaviors, thoughts, motives, and emotions that typify how we react and adapt to other people and situations.”(433) The study of personality focuses on two broad areas: One is understanding an individual’s differences in particular personality characteristics, such as sociability or irritability. Based on Max’s behaviors he is labeled as a psychopath and diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder. Psychopathy, also referred to as sociopathy, “is traditionally defined as a personality disorder characterized by enduring antisocial behavior, diminished empathy and remorse, and disinhibited or bold behavior.” Max has been consistently in and out of multiply jails and prison since preadolescence. He has been arrested for torturing and killing cats, arson for setting his ex-girlfriend’s car on fire, aggravated assault and attempted rape, all before the age of thirty. In Max’s description he is known to show anger physically and verbally and has no empathy towards anyone; furthermore, based on Max’s actions many of his behaviors need to be changed and treated as soon as possible. He needs to deal with controlling his anger in a health way, learn to communicate and show remorse for the humans around him. For Max’s condition Antisocial personality disorder is described in DSM IV as “a pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others occurring since age 15.
