We all have in some type of way or form a personality disorder which affects the general public in many different ways. Personality disorders affects many people by having emotional and mood swings, social skills, and many of them will have issues in having a stable or healthy relationship. In this paper will take a closer look on the characteristics of the personality disorder. We will discuss the etiology of the disorder and how the characteristics of the disorder have been linked to criminal behavior. The paper will show the early warning signs and the assessment methods and treatments that can be used to control the disorder before if affects the person which will lead them to criminal behavior.

There are different patterns that engages in being a more aggressive person were they don’t have a conscious and have no feelings on how they can hurt a person. ASPD “have patterns of unlawful behavior, aggressiveness, deceitfulness, impulsivity, reckless disregard for the welfare of others” (Edens, Kelley, Lilienfeld, Skeem, & Douglas, 2015). People with this particular disorder don’t care about what might be wrong. It is a higher risk that people with ASPD are a threat to our communities and many of the criminals that are caught have some type of Personality Disorder. For example, in the case of Cook v. the State in 1991, “the defendant had severed ASPD and doctors assumed he would be a threat regardless of where he was; however, Cook did 22 years on death row and was exonerated and released” (Edens, Kelley, Lilienfeld, Skeem, & Douglas, 2015). This particular case has question how reliable is the diagnose for ASPD. In order for people to get diagnose they are many test and psychological evaluations that are done. The main issue a person has when diagnose with ASPD are behavioral issues and personality disorders. “This form of a personality disorder is rare in the general population; however, in the criminal justice population it is exceedingly common with a rate of 50%” (Hatchett, 2015). Incarceration is a type of treatment that we can sent them too but it will become very costly than putting them in treatment facilities. “The “treatment facilities consist of various programs like domestic violence groups, boot camps, therapeutic communities, mental health courts, and substance abuse programs” (Hatchett, 2015). Another way of helping the person of having bad mood swings or mental illness is to medicate the person. This will help them relax and stabilized their
