Chris believed that humans could survive solely on self reliance and never contact another human being again. This is untrue but we can survive for periods without others. When trying to find yourself, odds are having tons of people around is going to make it hard and there will be a heavy influence. However, nobody could live their whole lives without seeing somebody else. This would cause paranoia and lead to various mental illnesses. Chris knew that in order to find himself he had to be alone, this was a smart decision. For other people they know that they need someone around and they communicate those needs. “You are wrong if you think Joy emanates only or principally from human relationships. God has placed it all around us. It is in everything and anything we might experience. We just have to have the courage to turn against our habitual lifestyle and engage in unconventional living” (Krakauer 57). Too much social interaction can lead to irritation and exhaustion, especially for introverts. This breed of people needs to have the ability to recharge and have time to themselves. While extroverts live for other people and social gatherings with lots of people to interact with. Although Chris believed this would make a perfect life, it does not seem suitable for many. As humans we enjoy having nice things to show off for our guests and if that is what makes our life complete, then good! We also have severely mixed emotions on sex and intimacy. Our society pushes it under the carpet while simultaneously shoving it down our throats. Our species also needs interaction in order to survive but each individual must create their own boundaries.
