To me, this quote indicates that Seligman holds a very contemporary perspective in regards to psychology. A couple decades ago, the mentally ill were seen as inferior and tossed into mental institutions where they would then endure inhumane medical procedures or be used as test monkeys. This quote represents how far civilization has advanced when it comes to addressing mental health issues. Seligman recognizes that in order to breed lasting happiness, one must take the steps to build a productive lifestyle and embrace the pain. If your sole focus in life is to avoid sadness, you may developed a reserved personality and have difficulty connecting with others, fueling dissatisfaction.…

In order to achieve happiness, one’s life must be submerged with a sense of meaning, reason, and worth, thus happiness must be justified. To obtain a meaning to life, one must contribute to life to progress their talents which will, in turn, help themselves and others. But more importantly, Swenson speculates that the purpose of one’s life is to develop an instinctive view of life to achieve happiness. Swenson explains the difficulties with the idea of happiness which he believes are derived from the fixation on the material and the external world.…
