David Behm Reflection

Improved Essays
In class today Dr. David Behm gave a presentation on his journey to becoming a professor, and different avenues attainable with a degree in kinesiology. Dr. Behm detailed his life path which brought him to where he is today, and the different career changes, and changes in aspirations along the way. Dr. Behm advised us to keep our options open, and not to specialize early. He also explained how a high percentage of the population change their careers. I found Dr. Behm’s presentation interesting because it was relevant to my life. I’ve changed my degree and career choice twice since I’ve been in University. At first it was engineering, then it was RCMP, and now a Bachelor of Kinesiology as a stepping stone into physiotherapy or med school. His …show more content…
They spoke about what the HKR society was, and gave tips for us to have success in the HKR program. Being in a student society such as this can be beneficial to students. As mentioned in the associated article, there are a ton of reasons to join. My favorite was the building of people skills. I’m a bit too shy, so being in a society could help me overcome this. Logan and Ashley gave a lot of helpful tips that I’ll make sure I use throughout my degree. The tip I can relate to the most is about going to the lab exam review for anatomy. I would have gone anyways, but their description on how important these sessions can be and being able to see the models I’d be tested on helped me to make sure I’d go no matter what. I’m writing this journal on November 15th, and lab exam review sessions have been ongoing this week. There will also be sessions next weekend, so I’ll be capitalizing on that opportunity as well. Another topic of interest in this presentation was the proper way to email your professor. I feel this is important because if you don’t address your professor in the proper way, or send an unprofessional email, the professor may feel inclined not to respond to you at all. This could result in an important question not being answered. As students we need to realize teachers are there as a resource for us, and most of them are happy to help

Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC) has guided me, a 49 year-old college sophomore, to utilize my academic grit in order to mentor other students, and past experiences to succeed in my educational and career goal as a visual healing artist. My 25 years of medical experience are rooted in my professional goal to be a visual healing artist. Mentors of my previous medical profession ranged from surgeons, doctors, and firemen to patients and their families, all of which helped me learn about human anatomy, kinesiology, and compassion for humanity. My medical career started over 25 years ago as an administrative assistant. I worked my way up the medical professional chain from my emergency medical technician (EMT) certification, registered dental assistant, x-ray technician, surgical technician, medical administrator of insurance billing and surgery scheduling, to an insurance agent of life and health, disability and long term care.…

But changing my mind and looking at different options allowed me to gain many experiences and know what I truly wanted to do because I was able to try things that were wrong for me. Like Ronald in the excerpt, I have had to make mistakes and stumble to know what I truly wanted. In the last year, I went back and forth between becoming a nurse or pursuing a career as a pharmacist. Usually, I changed my mind because I doubted my abilities and what I really can accomplish, but I was not content with the unknown of being indecisive. I chose to take the chance and pursue a career as a pharmacist since the possibility of the career excites me and I believe it would allow me to be satisfied with my life.…
