Personal Wellness Research Paper

Personally, I enjoyed this personal wellness journey and along the way I experienced many behavior changes in myself, which included many challenges, as well as successes. For my goals as far as my physical wellness, I believe I have shown significant growth in this area of wellness since setting goals for myself. Before starting this journey, I would rarely go to the gym or workout. My original plan for this goal changed a lot throughout the experience. Originally planning on going to the gym on Monday’s and Wednesday’s, I actually decided to change it to Wednesday’s and Thursday’s to better fit my schedule. Eventually, I stopped making a schedule for myself as encouragement to go to the gym and instead utilized my friends going to the gym …show more content…
Furthermore, I did record the amount of weight I was able to lift on different machines, thus allowing for me to visually see how I have gained muscle strength since I started my goal. I faced challenges such as not wanting to stick to my original plan, not being as active in the gym compared to other days and being sorer then expecting. Despite experiencing some challenges, I was successful when completing my goal. Currently, I workout more than I ever have and I am more physically stronger and have even increased my muscle mass. Due to my major at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington being exercise science, I plan to continue to grow in strength physically by continuing to workout each week. Furthermore, since my career goal is to work in the health field as an Occupational Therapist, I think it is important for myself to be physically fit so I am able to work with heavier weight patients easier and because I could also act as encouragement for my patients to …show more content…
Now having a completely different lifestyle and perception of life, I can confidently say I have grown in the environmental wellness area. I followed my goal by only using cold water when washing clothes, reusing trash bags, recycling, and by unplugging anything I am not currently using. The only part of my goal that I did not follow was buying plants that would make the air cleaner. Utilizing each of these practices weekly, I can say that I achieved my goal of growing in my environmental wellness by becoming more environmentally friendly. I did not face many challenges when pursing this wellness goal, although the main challenge I found reoccurring was the fact that I was limited in ways to utilize environmentally friendly practices daily. To help myself overcome this challenge, I practiced not using a plastic lid or straw when drinking to help lower the use of plastic. Also, I practiced conserving water daily by limiting myself to how much water I used while brushing my teeth, while taking a shower, while washing my face, and while washing dishes. As progressing through this goal, my behavior has changed dramatically. In the past I did not really seem to care about saving or conserving the world’s limited resources, making the environment a better place, or recycling, although now my attitude has changed. Currently, I see the positive outcomes of being

Also, my physical nutrition was a surprise to because I thought I was doing everything but turns out I need to do some more work and improve on it a little bit. A few years ago I began a fitness journey that blessed me in so many ways. I had reached a critical point where I was tired of not feeling good. It occurred to me that a 42-year-old shouldn’t have to use their hands to push themselves up off the couch just to stand up. I wanted more. I started looking for resources, but couldn’t find any that spoke to me-someone who really had no fitness level and hadn’t exercised regularly for years.…

At home I had no gym, access to a full kitchen, and a schedule that made for unpredictable meal times. I felt amazing at the end of the school year and wanted to keep up with lifting. My local Y had a summer membership for college students and a reciprocity program that allowed me to use any of the three YMCAs in my area which was great because I had one close to home and one close to work. I made a workout program that focused just on lifting, with my job being my “cardio” or going for a run on my days off. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to lift 5-6 days a week like I did during school…

I kept track of days, times, exercise routine, location as to where I chose to workout and a brief description of my overall feeling as to how I felt about the workout before and after. In my log my time choice to workout later in the day helped me maintain consistency and actually helped me feel better and having done it a little in the previous week unintentionally helped me have a desire to increase my workout. I also showed huge improvement in choosing to workout by including a side of sit-ups, arm workouts, or squats. There was also the momentum that kept me going and although not mentioned in my log my friend accompanied me most days and my parents where glad to hear that I had been to the gym more…

For my first wellness experiential I decided to research how important getting enough sleep is and how much sleep should people my age be getting every night and do a comic about how important it is to get enough sleep. I learned that I should get 8 ½ to 9 ½ hours of sleep a day and also learned that while teenagers sleep, growth-promoting hormones, such as testosterone are produced. One other thing I learned was that when you don't get enough sleep you can't work physically and mentally as well as you could if you did get enough sleep. This is obviously wellness-related because not getting enough sleep affects your health. I think I spent a couple hours on this project.…

I forced myself to stay on track when given class time to work on homework, which made a drastic difference in the amount of time I had once I arrived at home for exercising. One obstacle that I was not able to predict was the two-week-long visit from my aunt and her two children. During this time, we ate mostly unhealthy foods, and they stayed in the room that has the exercise equipment, preventing me from being able to use the treadmill or weight bench. I also regained the weight I had lost, as well as a few extra pounds. My two other obstacles concerned food, which was a major factor in my failure to reach my goal.…
