Personal Values and Ethics Statement
When I think about the values and ethical beliefs in research, I think of the evolution of research and the unethical ways in which it was conducted during World War II and in the Tuskegee Syphilis Study which prompted reform.
Others share this view:
“Two marker events stand out (among many others) as symbolic of this consensus. The Nuremberg War Crimes Trial following World War II brought to public view the ways German scientists had used captive …show more content…
Furthermore, I believe that after these two horrific events that everyone became a little more aware of what is ethical and what is not. Moreover, researchers are now more coconscious than ever about their methods and adhere to strict regulations put into place by the United States Department of Health and Human Services. Because of my own personal experiences in my family with addiction I must make sure that my research isn’t biases. To clarify, my brother has been in prison for the last 18-years because of his addiction. He was a nonviolent repeat drug offender and because of Arizona’s strict laws, he has spent half of his life in prison instead of getting much needed treatment. “While many challenges exist in developing an effective and comprehensive treatment system for persons with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) in North America, concrete steps, led by clinicians, should be taken to bridge the treatment gap and control the opioid epidemic,” (Vashishtha, Mittal, and Werb, 2017, p.3). Of course, as a professional I will do my best to keep my own personal feelings out of my research, but I do believe that reform for our drug policies must be addressed before more lives are lost.
I resources and knowledge I have gained from this program will assist me in overcoming these challenges and any others I may face. I now know where to go and who to ask if I run into any additional problems. I think that the Belmont Report was one of the most useful pieces of knowledge I have gained and of course our school
